“Two Oaks at Poggiarellino For Anna” oil on linen “Two Oaks at Poggiarellino For Anna” oil on linen 6x9”. “In the fall of 2025, when I knew that life was ebbing away from you, I came to Poggiarellino. You and
Lele were among the only real Sienese friends I had made in my twenty three years in Buonconvento.
I spent countless hours painting on your magnificent estate, among the vineyards, in the forest, and
under the ancient oaks. We shared a love of art and good food, hosting dinners at each other’s homes
routinely through the years. Conversations flowed easily and often continued late into the night.
Time was never a concern. I was new to Death and did not have the ability to help others through it, let alone cope with it myself. I was not new to doing what I believed was right though. I had to be with you both, show my thanks and love for all that you had given me in these years. But what could I possibly have to say that would offer consolation in any way? I feared the awkward silences groping for the right words in impossible moments. As always in challenging times painting provided the answer. I spent many hours in those days revisiting my favorite motifs at Poggiarellino. Each day I would casually stop over and chat at the end of my session, reviving a routine from an earlier time. Normal, just like the old days. It worked somehow. When I think of the Poggiarellino landscape it is the centuries old oaks to which I am most attached.
They have endured so much, and for so long. Quiet witnesses to worlds come and gone. I have
painted them many times, alone and in the company of others. I hope to again. They have become a
part of me. Like you Anna. Painting is a form of gratitude and love.#pleinairpainter
Coming home from Massachusetts yesterday at sunset Coming home from Massachusetts yesterday at sunset I had a wonderful New York City moment. Since my earliest youth, I am moved every time I see the skyline. Last night it was exceptional. #newyorkcity
Near Te Mata North Island New Zealand oil on linen Near Te Mata North Island New Zealand oil on linen mounted on wood 12” x 12” One of my studio pieces this winter. The composition has a sort of Yin and Yang contrast to it. Almost mirror image shapes, near and far. I realized it was risky to dedicate such a big amount of surface area to that swelling hill in the foreground. But as it emerged on the canvas, it had an energy that I wanted to leave as it was. #contemporarypainting #landscapepainting #newzealand #oilpaintersofamerica #smallpainting
